AMV Hell 1 or the original AMV Hell is about 5 minutes in length with 18 entries, and it premiered May 28, 2004. I can’t say much about AMV Hell 1, because it was really short. It was so short that it felt like I was watching a special promo for a TV show coming out in the spring, but suffice to say it did have its funny moments, and was rather enjoyable.
AMV Hell 2 The Son of AMV Hell: Apparently the first one was so popular that they decided to spawn another one. It aired on May 28 2004, it was about 5 minutes as well, and had 17 segments with five “Cutaway Scenes” featuring Evangelion. Again I thought this was also a bit too short, kinda like the type a skirt a slut would wear, but hey that again is beyond the point, it was still funny and didn’t over emphasize on one particular anime in general. Again kids under the age of maturity should not be watching this, but wtf, r? who’s gonna stop you? FCC? Well if they can find a way I guess they would.
AMV Hell 3: The Motion Picture. All I have to say is “Hat’s off gentlemen, a genius”. It has a running time of about 65-70 minutes, 220 segments, 11 “Cutaway” scenes of Osaka form Azumanga Daioh, and an intermission. The only disappointment for me was that they used way too many clips from Azumanga Daioh (23 to be exact), and Neon Genesis Evongelion, however the Gieko Commercial was pretty funny. I also believe they could have done without the clip of “Legend of the Mystical Ninja” or the song “Con Insanity”, however it more than makes up for it by have the “Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Theme” and the “Red Vs. Blue” clip. The intermission was a bit weird to say the least, and the “cutaways” kind of led me astray from time to time especially when the screen when black, and I almost clicked out of the screen I was watching it on. Of course that is probably what the editor was trying to make the viewer do, so for that I applaud. Well on to the next one I guess.
AMV Hell 4, or more commonly referred to as AMV Hell 3: The Motion Picture II: AMV 4: The Last One: is by far the best and the longest of all six. It has a running time of about an hour and half, has 254 segments, was aired on September 21 2007. The difference between this one and its other brothers is that not only long, but there is no intermission or “cutaways” scenes. It is also not as overbearing on a certain anime. It’s a quality blend of music and comedy, just like coffee…mmmm coffee….uh? where was I? Oh right the Hell that is the Fourth set of AMVs rioght. This move was perfect in my eyes with the exception of a few things. The two Naruto anime clips of “The Cuppy Cake Song” and that infernal song that makes me want to kill that purple bastard even more the “I Love You Song” I thought this was meant for a mature audience, not some family video put out by Disney. But hey that’s beyond the point. If you can look past these two indiscretions then everything else is great about it, for the most part. Another thing that intrigued me was the commercial segment, however when I do go to a Toys R Us I gereally can’t find the “Can You Feel My Boner? Twister” edition. The ending credits was “Black Parade” by My Chemical Romance, and I don’t believe that they could have picked a better song. So on this installment of AMV Hell I give 2 thumbs up.
AMV Hell Championship Edition: Aired June 6 2006 (6,6,6), had a running time of about 30 minutes, 55 segments, and this was a contest to see who could make the best AMV clips. The only downside was that they had a tendency of using the same song a few times too many, for example, “Big Balls” or “Albuquerque”, but other than that it was pretty good. I applaud all the competitors who put forth their time and energy in making there clips. Overall not the best AMV Hell, but not the worst.
As a whole collective unit I give the AMV Hell Series a 8.5 out of 10, with an honorable mention to opening credits for AMV Hell 4.
Just on a side note, if any of the editors or creators of AMV Hell are reading this I think it be appreciated by fans such as myself to be graced with another installment of AMV Hell, even though AMV Hell stated that it was the last one, I personally hoped that it was a lie.
